This past week State Superintendent Richard Woods took a bold stand when he told system superintendents that they do not have to comply with the USDOE’s Dear Colleague letter on bathroom equity and the resolution of the matter is up to the local board. The local board will make a decision as to how they will handle the issue. Common sense is not as common as it used to be and this is one of several issues that is best left to local control. State or federal government attempting to impose standards on school systems often yields problems. I am firmly committed to equity and to the fair treatment of all but I still believe that is best done on a school by school basis and on a system by system basis. Lord will this election season ever end?
