Kerensa Wing, principal of Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, GA, has been honored as the 2020 National Principal of the Year. Each year, the NASSP National Principal of the Year program recognizes outstanding middle level and high school principals who have made amazing contributions to their profession and to students’ learning.

One of Wing’s main goals in her principalship was to assure learning was occurring at high levels with both students and teachers. This led her to develop a professional learning community structure among her team, which implemented scheduling changes to accommodate common planning and collaboration time using research-based practices for students. As a result, student performance on state assessments rose between 3 percent and 13 percent in proficient and distinguished levels on all tests.

Wing also sees her leadership role as an opportunity to provide the highest-quality education to her school community by hiring teachers who are right for the job and reflect the student population.

“Every student deserves a great teacher, and I make every effort to hire teachers who are content experts and student-focused in their approach,” said Wing. “The classroom teacher has the largest impact on student growth; I see my job of hiring, retaining, and training the best teachers as a path towards equity for students.” As an exemplary principal who serves as a model for compassionate school leadership, NASSP is honored to recognize Kerensa Wing for this prestigious award.
