The Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals (GASSP), an affiliate of the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders (GAEL), is pleased to announce Dr. Alan Long as its new Executive Director. GASSP promotes the cultural and professional development among high school principals, middle school principals, and assistant principals of Georgia as well as secondary education in Georgia.
Dr. Long is currently the principal of Jefferson County High School in Louisville, GA. Dr. Long’s career has spanned 38 years having served as a teacher, coach, and principal in both Texas and Georgia. He has taught science, health, and physical education. Dr. Long has also been the head boys basketball coach at Southeast Whitfield High School as well as having spent time as an assistant basketball coach at Tennessee Tech University.
Dr. Long has served on many executive or advisory boards during his time in education. He has served on the Executive Boards of both GAEL and GASSP, State School Superintendent Advisory Council, Governor’s Principal Advisory Committee, and the Executive Committee of the Georgia High School Association. Dr. Long is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), which is the national affiliate for GASSP.
“Dr. Long has an extensive record of advancing the mission of educational leaders at the state and national level”, said Dr. Jim Finch, 2019-2020 President of GASSP. “His advocacy efforts to local, state, and national legislators to improve and support the work of principals and assistant principals are second to none. We are excited about the future of GASSP and we are confident that Dr. Long will continue that great work as he leads our state association.”
Dr. Long will replace Mr. Melton Callahan, GASSP’s Executive Director since 1997, at the end of the 2020 school year.
