Family Time at Summer GAEL Conference

Monday April 24, 2017

When H. M. Fulbright and others put together the first GAEL Summer Conference to begin on the second Sunday of July 1974, they intentionally designed the conference to be family friendly.  The Summer Conference has continued that emphasis to this day.  The family friendly lineup for 2017 includes our traditional partner Oceans of Fun operated by the Georgia 4H.

My children participated in Oceans of Fun as have legions administrator’s children across the years.  On Sunday night, we have the traditional VALIC Low Country Boil that invites family members for the price of $10 for adult guests and $5 for children. (The charge from the Convention center is over $50 per person and it is only through the sponsorship of VALIC that we can make the celebration meal available to everyone—it is a substantial investment on the part of our friends from VALIC!)  Following the VALIC Low Country Boil on Sunday night will be the 4H In Clover Concert.  The show band/choir performances are outstanding will we all look forward to seeing our favorite students perform.

Monday afternoon and evening offer lots of fun!  At 5:00 PM is the John Yates Beach Run which is open to all family members and is free of charge and you get a great t-shirt.  The fun run was started by former GAEL Executive Director John Yates.  Trophies and plaques will be awarded to section winners.  Beginning at 8:00 PM Monday evening is the Family Fun Extravaganza located at the Jekyll Island Miniature Golf Course.  Members and family members will be able to play a free round of golf, enjoy ice cream and popcorn, and bouncy castles for the younger children.  We will even have a photo booth—a true beach tradition.  The miniature golf course parking lot is the best place on the island to see the traditional GAEL Fireworks Show that will start about 9:15 PM.

The Summer GAEL Conference has always been a place to learn, network, and enjoy your family!   Registration is open at
